Marketing Veteran Gets Added to Honor Roll

Allan Woods, current President of the New York Amateur Sports Alliance and an exemplar of vigor in the golden years, is added to the honor roll of Madison Who’s Who.

After a successful thirty-one year marketing career with IBM/Lexmark, Mr. Woods has re-directed his energies toward the promotion of amateur athletics in New York State. More specifically, he has re-dedicated himself to the spread of men’s field hockey as a popular sport in the United States through his involvement at all levels, from community to Olympic preparation.

His interest in amateur sports was prompted by a lifetime of both play and officiating, and has reinforced his interest in both the technical aspects and personal aspects of his beloved pastime.

Mr. Woods is well qualified for his position as president, serving previously as the director of the Pan-American Hockey Federation for twenty five years. This experience, coupled with numerous other positions in sport governing councils, combine to provide him with a leadership background and a deep understanding of his responsibilities.

Allan is a dedicated husband and father, who still plays field hockey on a senior level. He is also busy producing a bi-annual Hockey Alumni Newsletter, and a family history.

Prior entering into the business world, Mr. Daskaleas received a B.A. in both engineering and business economics, an MBA from Trinity College & University in the United Kingdom, and a Ph.D. in Financial Analysis.
After completing his education, Mr. Daskaleas worked for several years as both a trader and an analyst, building his resume throughout the 90s, eventually attaining the title of Director of Asset Management for Dynamic Securities S.A., an investment and trading firm located in Athens, Greece.  Recognized by his professional community and the trade organizations with which he has affiliated himself, he was named “Man of the Year” in 2000 by a Greek economic journal.

Mr. Daskaleas has produced a prolific corpus of work, including thousands of daily published reports on the ASE, NYSE, and FX market.  He has also set himself up as a vigorous educator, providing numerous lectures and seminars throughout the world at various economic consortiums.

These are sometimes thinly veiled scams designed to get individuals to part with their money and NOT an exclusive directory like a legitimate Who’s Who published by professional directories like Madison Who’s Who, which have an elaborate selection process.

Often the companies that “own” these registries are recently incorporated and the few individuals listed in them (who often post that on their web sites) are people who are being listed in the directory as a marketing tactic.  Therefore, the publication of their names in these directories is just a form of vanity publishing, and doesn’t really accomplish the professional networking that these directories were intended for.

Often blogs or forum posts that discuss these scams have entries by someone who is stating that they used the directory to make valuable business contacts, but these posts cannot be verified and are like other online reviews that provide no verification of the consumer or user’s identity. 

If you want to benefit from all of the opportunities provided by professional directories, it’s important to choose a directory that is reputable, such as our directory at Madison Who’s Who.

My family members also have my cards,and give them out to everyone they talk to. As networking specialist for Entrepreneur Magazine, Ivan Misner points out, the business card is the single most powerful business tool you can invest in.

The two main functions of your card are to gain business from the person you give it to and to get your name out to other people from this person who now has your cards. When you give out your card, always write something personal on it.

This will give that card a greater chance to be held onto by the receiver. Be sure to give them more than just one card, however, so they can pass them out. A classic tip for receiving cards is to make notes on the card shortly afterwards, in order to jog your memory about that person.

Contact them after the event to say something nice and mention something specific from your meeting; this helps to remind them who you are and think about you when a potential referral comes their way.

Keep in mind, effective gloabal networking does not have to be something to dread. If you shudder just thinking about it, I challenge you to start practicing. Pick a small event where you know most of the people and feel relatively comfortable.
